Contours and Whispers
Landscapes In Relief
Exhbition by Sally-Ann Davies and Maggie Dawson
This exhibition combines the distinct yet harmonious styles of two Taupo printmakers, Sally-Ann Davies and Maggie Dawson, both deeply inspired by the captivating beauty of the natural environment. Through their unique approaches to relief printing, they offer contrasting perspectives on the landscapes that surround us.
Sally-Ann Davies presents bold layered woodcut prints. Her process is focused on reduction woodcut printing but enriched by combining the processes of monoprinting and collagraph printing to add more texture to her artworks. Strong lines carve out the essential contours of the land, capturing the forms of the landscape.
In contrast, Maggie Dawson’s reduction linocut prints whisper with subtlety and calm. Through meticulous carving and layering, she achieves a delicate touch that evokes the fluidity and softness of watercolour. Her interpretations of the landscape reveal the quieter moments and gentle textures found within nature.
"Contours and Whispers" invites viewers to explore these two distinct forms of relief printing with an original twist achieved by both printmakers. Sally-Ann’s bold lines and textural depth speak to the bold presence of the land, while Maggie’s soft washes and delicate forms capture its more elusive and tranquil aspects. Together, their original hand-pulled prints offer a rich appreciation for the natural world, revealing both its powerful structure and its quiet beauty.
